Media, Investigative Journalism and Technology Conference
Practitioners, journalists, media academics and researchers who work in the creative industries are invited to participate in the inaugural Media, Investigative Journalism and Technology Conference 2010 at the Auckland University of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand.

Visiting Pacific journalists at PMC (by invitation)
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is arranging a week-long visit to New Zealand for three Pacific journalists, who will visit PMC as part of their programme. Morning tea with a short presentation by our team followed by informal discussions about Pacific media issues.

Reporting Wars: The ongoing challenges seminar
The AUT Pacific Media Centre is jointly hosting with the International Committee of the Red Cross and New Zealand Red Cross a screening of the film Balibo about the killing of six journalists in East Timor in 1975 and a public seminar on the safety of journalists, "duty of care" and international humanitarian law.
Keynote speaker - Tony Maniaty (Australian Centre for Independent Journalism and author of Shooting Balibo). Also speaking - New Zealand war correspondents Cameron Bennett (TVNZ), Mike McRoberts (TV3) and independent journalist Jon Stephenson. Chair - Dr Camille Nakhid (PMC Advisory Board).

A special edition of Pacific Journalism Review on war reporting will be launched by Jean-Luc Metzker, head of the ICRC Delegation in the Pacific, based in Suva, Fiji. Register your interest with rosemarie.north@redcross.org.nz

UNESCO World Press Freedom Day Conference - Pacific stream
Hosted at Australia's University of Queensland, this is the first time that the annual World Press Freedom Day event will be held in the Pacific. The university's School of Journalism and Communication is organising the conference on May 2 and 3 2010.

Film: BurmaVJ, a combined documentary and seminar about independent news media in Burma under the military junta presented by the Pacific Media Centre's Asian Journalism Fellow, Violet Cho.

This 84min film won top prize at the 2008 Amsterdam Documentary Festival last December. It is the story of how a group of citizen journalists filmed and got their images out to the world's media during the so-called "Safron Revolution" in September 2007. Exiled independent journalist Violet Cho will present her seminar and also the film.

Seminar: PACER - the latest tool for recolonising the Pacific, Professor Jane Kelsey (University of Auckland). Co-hosted by the School of Art and Design, the Pacific Media Centre, and the School of Communications.

Australia and NZ are now pushing for Pacific leaders at the Forum Leaders' meeting in Cairns in August to agree to negotiations for a free trade agreement known as PACER-plus. Jane Kelsey's talk will examine the geopolitical, social and economic implications of a 'trade' treaty that is the latest tool for recolonising the Pacific.

Film: Papa Bilong Chimbu, a documentary film by Verena Thomas.

This 54min film was shown at the 2008 Tahiti Film Festival and other festivals. It is the story of a young missionary, Fr John Niles, who arrived in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea in 1937 and stayed there for 54 years, living with the people of Chimbu. The film maker will be arriving from Australia to introduce the film.

Film: The Insider, directed by Michael Mann. Starring Al Pacino and Russell Crowe. Pacific Media Centre, WT002, AUT Tower, 2 Rutland St, Thursday, March 19, 5-6.30pm.
A feature film telling the story about a US tobacco industry whistleblower and a 60 Minutes journalist and the attempts to gag the story about how the industry covered up the health hazards.

Opening PMC seminar for 2009: Spies and Asia-Pacific issues.

Murray Horton, secretary of the Christchurch-based CAFCA (campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa, and Maire Leadbeater, spokesperson of the Indonesian Human Rights Committee, will speak on the SIS files, surveillance of the cicil society and implications for the Asia-Pacific region.

Double end-of-year seminar: 1. From Lezard to Eye of the Land - the environment and nickel mining in Kanaky. Jim Marbrook, television lecturer, AUT University. Conflict reporting - the dangers of hostage taking: The showing of the controversial ABS-CBN video Kidnap - never before shown in New Zealand - and discussion on the capture of journalists focusing on the recent case of the top Filipina journalist Ces Drilon.
