Hikoi calls for Maori inclusion in Super City plans

Pacific Media Centre, 25 May 2009

A hikoi on gathered more than 6,000 peaceful demonstrators in the middle of Auckland city centre to protest the New Zealand government's refusal to include up to three seats for local iwi in the new 'super city' council.

Crowds gathered at various locations around the city, including the Domain, Bastion Point and Victoria Park. Marching from these locations, they converged at the bottom of Queen Street, then made their way up to an assembly point across Aotea Square and the Town Hall. Parts of Queen Street around this area was closed to traffic because of the rally.
