MELBOURNE (Journalism Education Association of Australia / Pacific Media Watch): The University of the South Pacific journalism newspaper Wansolwara has won an awards double at the Journalism Education Association of Australia's (JEAA) annual Ossie awards for student journalism.

Wansolwara's story on the Miss World Fiji beauty pageant in its June issue, by Edward Tavanavanua and Parijata Gurdayal, was named Best Print News Story of the Year.

Wansolwara was also awarded the Dr Charles Stuart Prize for Best Publication after judges noted the difficult circumstances under which it was published, including state censorship until earlier this year.

Irene Manueli, a former senior journalist on The Fiji Times, is supervisor of this newspaper.

Edward Tavanavanua is a first-year Journalism student. Parijata Gurdayal was a third-year student when the beauty pageant story was published. She has since graduated and is employed in the Attorney-General's office.

The Miss Fiji fiasco article was also published by Pacific Scoop.

The University of the South Pacific regional journalism programme won three Ossie awards in 2000 for its coverage of the George Speight coup plus other prizes.

It has won a total of 14 Ossie awards since the first for Wansolwara in 1999.
