WEST PAPUA: NZ media ignore killing of 8 Indonesian soldiers story, says Mediawatch

WELLINGTON (Radio NZ Mediawatch / Pacific Media Watch): Radio New Zealand's Mediawatch programme, hosted by Colin Peacock, today featured how New Zealand media have virtually ignored West Papua news such as the killing of eight Indonesian soldiers last week as the independence struggle intensifies.

Only Pacific Scoop and Radio NZ International featured this as a major breaking story while in Europe it was important news, reported Jeremy Rose.

This week's Mediawatch programme featured: How the race to be the first with the news can mean being wrong with the news; how the Hobbit came back into the headlines; how a TV news show handled the victim of an online viral video; and why a deadly conflict nearby - in West Papua - gets more coverage in Europe's media than it does in New Zealand.
