VIDEO: Kidzone presenter profiled as AUT student

Television New Zealand has profiled AUT journalism student and Kidzone presenter Kayne Peters in its IAMTV programme.

Peters recently completed a postgraduate diploma in communications studies (journalism) at AUT and is looking at producing his own work in the future.

The TVNZ6 presenter told TVNZ:

"I chose to study here at AUT because I am from Auckland and I wanted to stay local for my whanau, I am one of the eldest."

He said he started on Kidzone and was soon driven to study to develop his writing skills.

"I wanted to expand on my writing so that I could eventually write my own shows."

Peters spoke about the AUT University Communications Studies publication Te Waha Nui which this year launched a new website under the leadership of fellow student and online editor Alexander Winkler.

"Our stories that we write in Te Waha Nui, a lot of the mainstream media don't pick up on," he said.

"So it's quite a good thing that the newsrooms get this sent to them."

He said it was important that the Māori voice is heard in today's media organisations.

"A lot of non-Māori cover stories on us that are stereotypical because that's all they know," he said.

"It's our responsibility to help people understand."

Peters said he is very positive about his future career and what it holds for him.

"Right now I feel I am in the right place, doing the groundwork to start moving towards the bigger picture."
