Dr Sylvia C. Frain has been appointed as an AUT Strategic Research Investment Fund 2018 Postdoctoral Fellow attached to the Pacific Media Centre in Auckland University of Technology's School of Communication Studies.

Dr Frain’s research is part of an ongoing collaboration of artists, activists, and academics who explore (de)colonisation and (de)militarisation efforts and resistance and solidarity (fluidarity) across Oceania through a gendered and visual lens.

Her current project seeks to further examine Pacific women’s new media strategies to resist colonisation and militarisation through participatory and emancipatory digital and new media methodologies. She will produce an online digital academic and activist archive for Oceania, modelled after the Standing Rock Syllabus.

Dr Frain is also a Research Associate with the Richard Flores Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center (MARC) at the University of Guam in Micronesia. She earned her doctorate from the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies | Te Ao O Rongomaraeroa at the University of Otago | Te Whare Wānanga Otāgo. She completed her Masters of International Studies in the field of Peace and Conflict Resolution from the University of Queensland, Brisbane in 2011 and her undergraduate degree with the Global and International Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2004.
