Kanak mining and the media project: Research study and pilot documentary (2007/8)

Fiji coup archiveThe Pacific Media Centre has awarded a research grant to independent film maker Jim Marbrook to help develop a documentary about indigenous Kanak political and industrial rights and nickel mining development in New Caledonia. Marbrook, who is also a television lecturer in AUT University’s School of Communication Studies, has produced an eight-minute pilot video, Towards Grand Terre, as a first step in the project and is working to a full documentary feature out of this project. Ngatihine forestry development and the media: A case study (2007)

Fiji coup archivePhotojournalist John Miller (Ngati Rehia) is embarking on a 'journalist-in-residence' project in August researching the Ngatihine forestry block development in mid-Northland in the 1970s in the context of a confrontation about the use of Maori land. He will present this research as a case study with a focus on the way in which mainstream and alternative forms of media represented the issue. He is being assisted by Dr Geraldene Peters, AUT's School of Communication Studies.

Pacific Media Watch (2007)

Joint D-Space digital repository research archive – a partnership with AUT University Library. A 10-year archive of media freedom, media ownership, ethics and professional media issues archive as an open resource for Pacific journalists and media researchers. Originally established at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

Pacific Journalism Review (two editions due in 2007)

The Pacific Journalism Review, founded at the University of Papua New Guinea in 1994, is a peer-reviewed journal covering media issues and communication in the South Pacific, Asia-Pacific, Australia and New Zealand. It is now published by the School of Communication Studies, AUT University, and has links with the University of the South Pacific.
